A Breath of Inspiration

I live my life as a pedestrian. There are many highs and lows that go along with that. For one, I never have to worry about parking, but it can often take 3 times as long to get somewhere. You win some, you lose some, c’est la vie. One of the bigger benefits for me is getting to zone out to music and just sink into my head for a bit. This week has been incredibly stressful, but I did try to take some time during my commute to just really absorb my journey. That’s when I realized that every day while I’m riding the train with music blasting in my ears, I am actually planning out future films I’d like to make. Whenever I listen to an album, I will conjure images in my head to go with it. The train is just the perfect place for me to really dwell on some of those cinematic ideas. Sometime the music can be nostalgic, and I’ll find myself plotting out my own biopic and even picturing specific scenes. When the music is high bpm with that deep bass I envision the neon noir cityscapes from the depths of my imagination. Surprisingly the often morosely mundane trek from west Seattle to the heart of capitol hill has turned out to be one of my greatest creative tools. From now on I will continue to really pay attention to what I’m thinking about while on the train, and hopefully get started on a few screenplays.

A PetCube Mood Board

This campaign for the PetCube treat is a joy for the whole family. That is why for this mood board I decided to really hone in on the family aspect. I chose yellow and white for my main colors and high key lighting to reflect bright and happy feelings. To appeal to the main clientele I wanted to incorporate real people who are head over paws for their pets. For textures I went with smooth, sleek, and simple textures so as to not detract from this amazing luxury item that will bring you not only joy, but with the built in camera and mic, peace of mind that your furry loved one is safe and sound waiting for you at home.

Pros and Cons of Various Employment Types

There are many different types of jobs one may find themselves presented with once they step out of the realm of academia. There are contract/freelance/gig workers who typically work part from the client or company they provide services for. This can be great because it offers the worker more flexibility in their schedule as well as being able to work for various clients at once. They can usually get more money for their services then full or part time employees but this is necessary because these workers also have to pay there own medical, dental, etc. These folks also have different tax responsibilities as they have to file a 1099 instead of a W2.

Part time workers typically work around 30 hour per week. This can vary wildly in either direction though depending on where they work and how it is structured. This type of job many times will offer varied off days allowing for a bit more flexibility in scheduling. This can also be a hindrance though because nit can. make it difficult to plan for things long term. Part time employees are also paid hourly and are never salaried. They are paid for the amount of time they are clocked in for the company.

Full time workers have more legal protections than the other categories. They are more often eligible for raises and receive full benefits packages. They will often get a retirement fund as well. Full time work has much less flexibility and varied schedules than the other careers. The hours are usually rigidly set and the employee must work 5 days a week, and will be expected to work overtime.

For myself personally, I would either choose contract work or full-time (in house). I mostly want stability and benefits for my work so I think full time would be a good fit for me. I would also enjoy the freedom to set my schedule and choose when or when not to work as a gig worker.

Below are three links to Part Time job listings that I found through LinkedIn. I Picked one in Washington, one in NYC, and one in Redding CA:

Hockey Jersey

My design for the Coachella Valley Firebirds is inspired by past poster for the Coachella Music & Arts Festival. I chose the desert brow based off of the gorgeous rock faces surrounding the valley and the indigo matches the beautiful night sky over the desert. I think it makes for a great design and could double as a great out fit piece for the festival while supporting your favorite AHL team at the same time.

The Real Questions

Who am I? I am so many things but at the core I am an artist, I am queer, and I am kind of a bad ass. I want to work creatively on projects and realize all the fantasies I had as a child that I never thought could come true in a million years. I will do this for the little boy who grew up isolated, defeated, and afraid to be himself. I want to and will accomplish this because I am determined to do everything my younger self thought was completely unachievable. I want to stay in the film industry and help create works that I find interesting and inspiring. This could potentially keep me in Seattle or move me anywhere across the globe. I have an incredibly open mind and would love to try various places on for size. In my work I want to give voice to characters who are underrepresented in the mainstream media, whether that be folks of color, with disabilities, queer individuals, etc. I want to use my voice to tell kids like me that I see them, and I care, and that I will be a voice they can listen and relate to.

CUTting Game

This week we heard from Brooke Montgomery, creative director for Cut studio in Seattle. Their mission is to open people’s minds to things they have not had much interaction with and to pose challenging questions with the purpose of broadening an individual’s horizons. After spending a significant amount of time watching videos from the studio, I produced my own version of a Cut game. For my proposal I thought of a “Never Have I Ever” scenario. I feel like there is an extremely broad range of ages, races, nationalities, body types, etc. within the design and visual media programs that this game would elicit a variety of reactions. I think the main takeaway would be how different our individual life experiences are from each other. If we gathered 5 students from each respective program we would have a truly diverse range of players, then we could potentially have a panel of faculty members lead the “never have I evers” and the students would respond accordingly. I believe many of the younger students would have vastly different experiences than the older students. The various answers would sway in many directions, and I think that the results would be both informative and hysterical.

METAVERSE…or nah?

This week I attended a “MetaParty” in the metaverse. I was originally very apprehensive about participating in any of these events. After spending 30 minutes at this metaparty, I have concluded that my apprehensions were entirely justified. I can absolutely see the social appeal of the metaverse. Especially in a world just starting to put itself back together after a global pandemic. Being able to occupy the same space virtually has a lot of benefits to people who may be stuck in their home or who live far away from friends and family. Beyond that is where my sympathies abruptly come to an end. I find the idea of spending real money on virtual “wearables” is a deep marketing ploy to indoctrinate children into a capitalistic market before they are even old enough to realize what that is. I also find the graphics to be entirely repulsive. Tying that in with a virtual housing market that (just like in reality) is completely geared towards people who can afford it, which is not actually very many people, I find it to be entirely repugnant. The fact that there are “slums” available to those who do not “want” to go for a full property is just entirely against my morals. I do not see myself ever visiting the metaverse again, and if I never do, it would still be too soon.

Expectation to Fail

When I worked at Easy Street Records, we had a very prominent musician come in to do a signing to promote his then upcoming album. He is a very well known artist, especially in Seattle since this is where he hails from. I personally was not, nor currently am, a fan of this particular person. That said, I pride myself on my customer service skills and was determined to make this individual feel welcome and comfortable. I always set my expectations for myself very hard and tend to take it harshly if I do not deliver. In this instance I should have done some light reading or research on this guy. If I had, I would have known that he is famously sober, and a recovering alcoholic. I did no such research though and shortly after he arrived, I very casually offered him a complimentary alcoholic beverage. Now, the failure of this story comes from me not achieving the level of professionalism I pride myself on. The musician though, also could have handled the situation in a much kinder way than he did. He proceeded to lay into me about how I should have known better than to ask him that and that I was a complete moron for not knowing that he was in recovery. While yes, I easily could have figured that out, it is my belief that it truly was not part of my job to do such research and could have been informed his team. So, in that respect I think this counts as a failure to meet my own expectations and also a failure at developing trust on both my end and his. From that moment on though, I always did research on whoever was coming to the establishment and how I could give them the best service I could offer.
