hockey, but make her cute

lunar new year 2024 is the dragon

“The dragon is the fifth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac and is associated with good luck, strength, and wisdom. It is also the only mythical creature in the zodiac and is considered a divine celestial being that can control natural elements like water and wind. In Chinese culture, the dragon is also a symbol of imperial power and authority, and Chinese emperors considered themselves to be descendants of dragons.”

wouldn’t this be the energy we want for our hockey players?

the truck by porter

a late blog post

i work at porter, so i asked for the brand guidelines for the shop. the file we were given for the truck is not great (can we all admit it’s not a great file? come on). anyway, here’s a mockup i did in photoshop based on the current brand identity.

what i would like to know why apercu, the typeface for the shop, is almost 400 euros?

racecar backwards is racecar

a late post.

i won’t lie, i asked a few second years what projects we’d have this quarter and heard about the short film. i didn’t really understand what we were meant to do but i thought, hey, we’ll have until the end of the quarter to figure that out.

we had a few weeks, required dialogue, characters, props, and quite literally the best group i could’ve asked for.

heather and dan? love them, they are the best.

breakdown of the requirements:
-two minutes MAX (we went over that)
– the line “who let the dogs out”
– a racecar driver as a character
– an unrealistic fake chin

dan was sick for the first week, so heather and i got to know each other and bounce around ideas. i suggested a mocumentary and heather was down so we started planning right away. with eriks help, we were able narrow down a direction for the plot and ultimate script. not all of it stuck but it was the necessary foundation for what came of “racecar the movie”

dan, despite having the plague, was totally responsive and willing to talk with us from home. we zoomed and kept in constant communication. heather and i witnessed dan find and kill a spider. they met rosie (virtually). it was wonderful.

the next friday, i was running all around seattle and missed the first two hours of class. with a short, “we have had THOUGHTS” message from dan, i had no idea what i was walking into but come on, it’s dan and heather we’re talking about, of course it was funny and exactly what we needed. they had found a rendition of “who let the dogs out” and the perfect ending to our film. dan’s character, dan, was going to lose his mind and run off into the forest.

heather was so patient with me while we were in our organization phase of the project, i just really didn’t want to let them down so i was on my best behavior!!! we put together our shot list almost immediately and it made everything run so smoothly. heather is so talented, the way they just pieced together everything we needed, the shots, the equipment, the audio, the props. i’m so excited to see what their career becomes! they took such an insane video concept and were 1, soooo supportive and 2, brought it to life. i’m so thankful to have worked on this project with them. we created something together that we’re all so proud of.

and we became friends! what an honor!!!!

dan and i have worked on a project together in the past and have been in the same class for our first year so i already felt comfortable going into this project. i think dan and i have become better friends and i feel much more like myself with him now and i’m so thankful for that. i already knew dan was talented, i’m happy that everyone else who hasn’t gotten the chance to work with him yet gets to know that now, too.

it’s hard to even put into words how well i think we worked together on this. i had a moment when the three of were in the conference room when i thought of how much i wished i could stay in that moment, just bouncing ideas around with some friends. it felt so special. i hope we make more things together in the future.

extra monies

this weeks blog post is finding and choosing an organization to donate an imaginary $25,000 to. easy, i choose new beginnings.

new beginnings is a nonprofit organization that offers support and resources to people suffering from domestic violence.

here’s a quote from their “about us” section on the official website:
“New Beginnings is a member of the National and Washington State Coalitions Against Domestic Violence and the Coalition Ending Gender Based Violence. New Beginnings is also a member of the Seattle/King County Coalition for the Homeless, Seattle Human Services Coalition and is a United Way member agency.

i chose new beginnings because it’s an organization that i called for myself in 2019 and an organization that i called for my friend in 2022 and again just a few weeks ago.

there are a lot of other domestic violence organizations in washington state but i chose this specific one is because it’s one of the top results when searching for support in seattle and time to even search for help is so fleeting in these types of crises. it’s also usually the first organization or crisis number given to you when you’re reaching out for support elsewhere. we have to make sure victims aren’t turned away because there isn’t enough money to get them to safety!!!!!

they provide so much necessary support and resources for victims. advocates will find new and affordable housing for survivors or they will welcome them into one of new beginnings short-term residential homes before finding them their own housing. they help survivors with living costs and rent, childcare, legal aid, therapy. they also provide victims with emergency hotel stays for their safety when necessary.

something i just learned after reading through their site is that they also give direct financial assistance to survivors. it’s important to give survivors their autonomy back, financial abuse is so often forgotten about. anything to make survivors and victims of abuse feel safe and secure, i’m all about.

a moodboard blog assignment

cue: my little moodboard for a 32oz stanley dog bowl.

here’s the thing, i am not a stanley girl. i could sit here and tell you about my opinions on american consumerism and the overconsumption of shit we don’t need but one thing i’m not is a hypocrite who lacks self-awareness. yeah, maybe the rise of stanley culture on instagram has contributed to mass overconsumption but do you know how many non-stanley brand reusable bottles i have??? definitely more than one! who am i to say that having multiple reusable bottles is any different than having multiple stanley mugs just because they’re not from multi-million dollar corporations?

what can i say? i love having new surfaces to showcase my stickers. i’ve fallen victim to capitalist america, too. by buying more things, i can showcase my individuality with new stickers.

what would it take for me to purchase, or at a minimum, get on board with purchasing a 32oz stanley dog bowl despite probably already having numerous local and small batch ceramic dog bowls?? well i’d need to be a dog owner. i’d also have to get a dopamine rush from the cute little branding, i’m a sucker for that. perhaps a sandy liang collab moment.

if i had a dog, i’d coordinate our outfits and i’d overspend my money. so what did i do? naturally, i turned to little beast, the cutest dog sweater brand online, for inpsiration. who, by the way, has collaborated with sandy liang.

here’s a moodboard breakdown:

i aspire to be this person. i aspire to have less things and more open space. a clean kitchen. space for a plate on my dining table. a moka pot, a bink water bottle (i already have one). a fancy lamp. maybe, by buying a 32oz stanley dog bowl, i can slowly become her.

a girl who matches her cute quirky colorful socks with her sweet rescue dog.

a girl who will buy something simply for the packaging. okay, this is juice packaging, so what? i just bought a pair of pants in the color blueberry. this is right up my alley. i would love a 32oz stanley dog bowl in the color tomato. are you kidding?

last one. a sweet little dog illustration. tug at the heartstrings of millennials.

design systems

week 1 quarter 3

for this weeks blog assignment, i visited fluent, adobe spectrum and the guardian.

fluent
fluent had such a sweet design, obviously focused on depth and motion. i really appreciated the gentleness of their colors and the easy and clear navigation.

adobe spectrum
adobe spectrum looked like literally all the other adobe programs that exist, so much so that i wasn’t sure if i accidentally opened my creative cloud app or not. we love consistency. good for them.

the guardian digital design style guide
the guardian digital is so recognizable (love that for them), it used their distinctive typography + color palette and was a lot more interactive and visually interesting than the other sites, but hey, they have a different purpose. they have a design that, if you were in a rush and knew what you wanted to find, could be frustrating to navigate. but its fun and engaging! i actually went through the entire site and it didn’t feel like homework!

AR final project

so for this final project, my group and i decided on creating panels for sustainable businesses (second hand businesses). i chose late night vintage market!

i began by finding images i wanted to use for the graphic panels, i found the tvs, the mouth and speech bubble but i got stuck on the sign. i spent what felt like an hour (i’m serious, i really stressed myself out here) looking for a blank sign that felt right.

i decided to pivot and drew everything instead. i drew for a couple hours and headed over to the market to get my video (and a few slices of pizza) but it still wasn’t what i had envisioned so i started over.

i circled back to the original graphics, found a sign i liked, edited everything in photoshop and got the panels set up. it was a nice day for a walk so i didn’t mind the second journey. eyejack is pretty intuitive so it didn’t take too long to get everything set up there.

the graphics include some copy from the website, the address, hours and their instagram handle.

i really love the vintage market (but truthfully, fremont vintage mall will always have my heart).

here are the panels:

door stopper clogs

a late blog post

i have a lot of places to be and very little time in between, so what i need is a shoe that can stop the train door so i never get stuck at the platform again.

enter: the clog door stoppers!

is it a golf club? no, it’s not. it’s a door stopper, pay attention.

it can be yours for $105, not bad! just attach her with some kitchen twine (your bar manager probably knows where it’s at) when you’re running late and you’ll catch those doors before they close!

the very very hungry caterpillar (an AR app experience)

project #3

okay hear me out, i might be 27 but this app is so fun and cute. i decided to try out my caterpillar (i didn’t know how to spell caterpillar before this, i’m afraid to admit) and honestly it was such a wholesome experience.

first, the app scoped out the environment and set up a tiny tiny egg on the desk when it found the surface.

tap and the egg hatches!

tap again and the scene sets up!

tap the apples for them to 1) fall off the branch and tap again 2) have a snack!

i really enjoyed how interactive this app was! i could even look behind objects and it didn’t glitch or anything! my phone did freeze after a few minutes but honestly, that’s fine.

i wish there were more ways to interact with it other than tapping but it’s literally made for children so i think it’s alright.
