WARNING: NAKED ROBOTS

BEWARE!!!!

(blog assignment #4)
Background

During the last week of finals, a friend of mine asked me if I could make her a poster/invite for her birthday party. I was swamped, yet, I agreed. Mostly because I was glad our recent breakup was still on good terms. Also I forgot to get her a gift.

The client ( Zoe ( my ex )) requested “Robot Babes”to be included in the poster. The Robot Babes, or “Robobabes” is of course in reference to Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama’s iconic 1980’s airbrush pinups. I was given creative carte blanche for the rest.

Actions

The process began with researching Sorayama’s portfolio and saving Robobabes that worked as components. I then collaged them with the required text into a rough layout. I was looking at a lot of Bráulio Amado‘ s club posters at the time & I wanted to experiment with some of his styles.

An issue I ran into with the Robobabes, was when cut out, they reflected their original backgrounds. Causing a red or blue hue on the edges & highlights. This limited my color palate options. I eventually settled with a vertical gradient of burnt orange to dusk blue.

Reception

The applause was deafening.

The client ( Zoe ( my ex)) was ecstatic.

Droves of my six friends who showed up rushed me when I arrived. Their eyes metaphorically lifting me upon their shoulders and parading me through the streets of Seattle as the CEO of Design. Onlookers rejoicing, jealous of my creative sensibilities.

Even friends of my ex’s coworkers complemented my work.

Plus mostly everyone showed up at the right bar at the right time. I’d call that a poster win.

Sincerely,

The CEO of Design

Sharpest Tool In The Shed?!?

winter, week #3

Ahh the Swiss Army Knife. Evermore a testament to the multipurpose capabilities humanity can imbue upon an object. However, What multipurpose capabilities has humanity imbued upon me? Furthermore, are there possessed capabilities that I could imbibe some more of? Also, what capabilities have not been imbued in me that I should try to imbibe?

Tools I’m Imbued With.

Creativity
Confidence (fake)
Drive

Tools That Could Use Some More Imbibing.

Sociability
Planning/Scheduling/Time Management

Blog Assignment #1: An Exploration into The Limitations of Image Generation Software and What That Implies for User Experience.

A journey through the lens of stone age home entertainment

Entertainment…Don’t we all love to be entertained? Since the dawn of time, humans loved entertainment . But we can only remember so much about back then.

Yet, I cant help but wonder “What made them entertained?!?!????!???!?”… I’d imagine it was a magic show.

Now… I wasn’t there, and no one took photos of shows back then. So here’s what I imagine happened:

Note the top hat, the wand, the Vegas style stage presence. All timeless staples of entertainment magic.

Yeah so this is totally what it would’ve looked like. Yet, this image leaves something to be desired.

And I’m at the limits of my artistic ability.

Unless…

…If I team up with Artificial Intelligence, we could create a near photorealistic image of that exact magic show.

“Dall-e, can you make me an image please?”

“Of course, what of?”

“caveman wearing a leopard print top hat and a leopard print toga performing a stone age magic show”

Feels like a daytime TV cake show ft. the Tiger-Liver King. Thumbs down. Throwing tomatoes. Time to reevaluate.

“leopard clad caveman performing spectacular magic show with rocks

Ok, now we’re getting somewhere. It’s certainly spectacular, but feels more like a cave DJ-set, or a cool guy at a party presenting his neat rocks.

“leopard clad caveman performing the most insanely spectacular magic show with rocks”

Notable lack of spectacular. Feels like a very serious talk with your cave-husband.
0/10 Insanity.

“leopard clad caveman performing the most spectacular magic show with the most rocks”

yeah.

“leopard clad caveman performing the most spectacular magic show with the most rocks and even more rocks”

Staggeringly Perfect. The lighting. The outfit. The exact wand I drew. 10/10 Rocks.

“Thank you Dall-e, that was a blast, you really know how to make a caveman.”

“That is so kind of you to say.”

“I love you.”

At the end of the day, Dall-e free is a great free image generator. The pictures are cohesive at a glance, and it didn’t totally freak out over abstract/subjective requests. Due to using all 6 of my tokens I will never be using it again.

Sincerely,

Baby Wants An ipad

I want an ipad very much.

Just so I can use procreate.

Although…

there’s a problem.

There are a hundred different versions,

and they all cost a million dollars

let me break it down…

Ok maybe I exaggerated, there are only 6 ipad models available to buy directly from apple. But only one can gain my consideration to purchase.

Ladies and gentlemen meet our contestants

Its guaranteed that an ipad mini would be instantly pulverized by my gorilla hands, so they’re cut from the race.

When interviewing ipad pro VI, they refused to take off their solid gold top hat and spat on me, too rich for my blood. Immediately disqualified.

ipad pro IV did the same but with 15% less spit. Another instant DQ.

That leaves us with 3 contestants, lets meet them.

Weighting in at $599 with 64GB & $749 with 256GB, a 10.9″ liquid retina display, 8GB of ram, and an 8 core CPU “M1” chip, give it up for the ipad Air!!

In the other corner, weighing in at $329 with 64GB & $479 with 256GB, a 10.2″ retina display, 3GB of ram, and a 6 core CPU “A13” chip, put ur hands together for the 9th gen ipad!!

In a similar but newer & better corner, weighing in at $449 with 64GB & $599 at 256GB, sporting a 10.9″ liquid retina display, 4GB of ram, and a 6 core CPU “A14” chip. say hello to the 10th gen ipad!!!

The judges criteria is that all the confusing numbers need to be as high as possible, while the money number stays as low as possible.

When comparing the 9th and 10th gen ipad, they seem functionally the same, the 10th being ~$100 more and slightly stronger (and maybe more future-proof?). The 10th also has a USB-C port which is appealing.

The real jump in power (and price) is when compairing the ipad to the ipad air. For ~$150 more that the 10th gen (~$250 > 9th gen) I can get a stronger machine with p3 wide color.

Now that brings up a question, what is p3 wide color ?

in short, its got more colors than sRGB. But that brings up TWO questions:

1) will I be able to notice it

maybe, I dunno

2) will it make my designs better

yes*

*as long as they are only viewed on my fancy ipad screen and nowhere else*

ipad Air: DISQUALIFIED

its tough picking between our final two contestants I like the new features the 10th gen brings, but is it $100 worth of features? and the 9th gen seems like it can handle everything I’d do on an ipad, but do I want to invest in a product so late in its planned obsolescence? much to think about.

In conclusion im not buying an ipad anytime soon. If one of the two finalists is on sale, or has a good refurbished deal, I might change my mind.

thnk u for coming to my ted talk/fight, everybody lost, congrats.

AR PROJECT AERO

This project began with playing around with the horse model’s scale. I noticed that if i made the Y-axis significantly less than the X and Z-axis, It created a very scary and unnerving table. From there I decided to recreate my mon-thurs table configuration to set the scene. For text I decided to thank a classmate for buying me coffee earlier, something I neglected to do at the time.

Currently, (8:05pm 12/17)I am unable to view this animation outside of the preview. (My phone is struggling to download IOS 16.)

AR PANELS

For this project we were asked to make an augmented reality experience at a location of interest. Our group picked Seattle landmarks, mine being the Fremont Troll. I took my text from a blog post from Austin Picinich for the Schack Art Center, and the website of The Friends of The Trolls Knoll (community ran park org). I made my panels in Figma, and styled them after a street sign. I downloaded my gif from a sketchy website then delicately laid it on top of a simple bridge image (also made in Figma).

Unfortunately, due to scheduling issues, we were not able to film on location.

AR POSTER

This project killed me. My animation worked on my rough draft, then never again………..Until it did.

Theme: Wrath

The process of making this began with absolutely refusing to learn any form of animation (fuck that), so I went to youtube and downloaded an old favorite vid. I though the best way to showcase it would be through a screen, so I traced over a photo on Figma.

my main struggle was getting eyejack to recognize the CRT screen. to fix that I made my designs increasingly simpler, turns out eyejack works better with complex images (who knew!) ((actually makes tons of sense)).

If I had more time (if I used my time responsibly), I would have warped the text to the curve of the screen’s glass, (would’ve looked sick).

Banned From Seattle-(Assignment #4)

This week I was challenged to build a life as an expat in a country of my choice. I chose Berlin.

“Why?” you may ask.

“Well…” (I would say). The climate is pretty similar to Seattle, so I wont have to buy a new wardrobe, and Berlin has a thriving arts scene that I’d love to experience. Furthermore, Berlin has actual dance clubs (with artists I follow performing at them) something Seattle technically has as long as you like being disappointed.

Speaking of disappointment, I have to get a job in this fantasy (wah wah). But, this is a fantasy, and I’m actually qualified for any position. So I would apply for the current opening at Studio Yukiko as a project manager.

“Why Studio Yukiko?” you again may ask.

“I’m getting to it” I’d respond. From what I’ve gathered online they strike a really good balance between [in Erik’s words] “ivy league” and “vaporwave”. I find their designs are very wacky and fun, while still clean and professional. The only issue I’d have is that they want someone with “excellent communication skills in both English and German”. and while I do talk good sometimes with English, I don’t think i know a single word in German (food dishes don’t count). But maybe, with time, I could use my fully developed adult brain to learn to speak German better than my dog-trash English (literally learned it when I was a kid, get off my back).

Relentless Design

My first impression of electronic-pop duo Louis the Child, was the gall required for a full Bieber helmet in 2023. I then noticed their chill “couchy” (yet uplifting) vibes. From there I knew I wanted to make something simple and relaxed.

I drew inspiration from the cover of their latest single “Stay With Me”. Which had Takashi Murakami -esque cloud characters floating in the stratosphere. I felt like an “in-the-sky” vibe fit their musical style (and the season). I also wanted to include their crown logo and the Bieber hair.

The solution I found for creating a “couchy-in-the-sky-bieber-hair” vibe was to have the duo sleeping like babies on some VERY comfy clouds. Since I cant draw planes (and hate birds), I chose to make clouds a motif, and repeated them relentlessly .
