AR APP – UI/UX Review ASSIGNMENT

Sketchar App Review: A Novel Idea, But Lacking in Customization

Sketchar is an augmented reality app that aims to teach and assist with drawing skills. The concept sounded appealing – choose an image, upload it, and have the app guide you in drawing it. However, my actual experience using Sketchar fell short of expectations.

Upon opening the app, I was surprised to find it already preloaded with set images rather than offering the ability to upload my own. While the illustrations were high quality, I wasn’t personally interested in drawing any of the preselected options. I wanted to practice sketching meaningful photos and images, not just random presets.

I did appreciate the simple, intuitive interface. The menu options and drawing tools were easy to navigate. Starting the tracing process was seamless – I just had to select an image and position my paper in view of the camera.

However, without a stand to keep my phone stable over the page, the AR view was shaky and difficult to follow. The app would benefit from either suggesting optimal setups or having built-in stabilization features.

The tracing functionality itself worked smoothly, with the line work overlaid properly on the physical page. I could control options like line weight and opacity. Yet, the lack of custom image uploading severely limits the value of Sketchar for me as a learning tool.

Overall, Sketchar has an innovative premise but needs more development to truly enhance drawing skills. The ability to upload personal images to trace would make the app much more customizable and engaging. Smoother AR functionality would also improve the user experience. With changes to content and stabilization, Sketchar shows potential as a fun way to improve drawing ability.

AR POSTER ASSIGNMENT

Bringing an Interactive Art Exhibit to Life with AR

I recently created an augmented reality poster inspired by an interactive art exhibit my wife and I experienced at the WNDR Museum in Pioneer Square. The exhibit featured a large, psychedelic screen with abstract visuals that reacted and changed based on my wife’s dancing motions in front of it.

Captivated by this experience, I wanted to try recreating that interactive feel through my own AR poster design for a class project. I took a distorted, abstract black and white silhouette picture of my wife dancing in front of the exhibit.

When viewers scan the QR code on my poster using the EyeJack phone app, they can then place their phone over the image to trigger responsive AR animation, a gif, and music. The visuals react based on the movement of my wife’s shadowy figure dancing in front of the psychedelic screen.

I designed the 8×11 poster with a bold, obscured image and no typography – just the abstract visual of my wife’s dance that is hard to totally make out. The AR animations are triggered by my wife’s motions, making the static poster come alive when viewed through the phone camera.

This project taught me how AR can take objects like posters and infuse them with interactive, immersive qualities. I’m excited to display this reactive poster in class, transporting viewers into a vibrant, musical art experience.

Blog Assignment #5

This picture is of some blocks that make up the sidewalk in Ballard that look like an L to me. Disregard the metal inlayed letters in the concrete, rather look at the L shaped blocks in the photo that the boots are pointing at.

Blog Assignment # 4 – Three European Cities I Wanna Work In as a Graphic Designer.

Several years back, in 2015 I believe it was, my wife and I took an awesome 5-week trip across Europe on the cheap. We hit up Rome, Amsterdam, and Berlin as well as Paris, Barcelona, and Prague. I totally fell in love with the idea of working as a graphic designer in any of those cities someday. In Rome, highlights included seeing the awe-inspiring Colosseum and other ancient Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. Being surrounded by thousands of years of history and culture would be amazing fuel for inspired graphic design projects. And the mouthwatering pasta was also to die for! Vibrant Amsterdam captured our hearts with its super eclectic neighborhoods connected by picturesque canals. We loved exploring the unique squats turned legal music venues and the sprawling Vondelpark. Biking around getting lost in the medieval streets was the best. Amsterdam’s outside-the-box character would really spark my creativity as a graphic designer. Gritty yet energetic Berlin enthralled us with its underground nightlife and thriving startup scene. It felt like a bigger, more metro version of Portland! The dynamic urban backdrop would be awesome for inspired graphic design work. With so many innovative companies, I’m sure I’d find tons of opportunities there. After getting a small taste, I’m dying to leverage my passion for graphic design in one of these amazing European cities someday. Rome, Amsterdam or Berlin would each provide killer inspiration and opportunities to progress my design career abroad. Fingers crossed I’ll get to make this dream happen! The history, culture, cuisine, and chance to do meaningful graphic design work would make for an unforgettable experience.
