Blog Post #9

  1. A project I would like to complete is to design a pattern for, and produce a smoking jacket. I would hope to gain a better understanding for the design process of creating patterns. I have a limited amount of experience with this process but only with simple pieces of clothing like sweatshirts and jeans.
  2. I think this project would take a considerable amount of time because of my already full schedule of school and work, and also because manufacturing takes a significant amount of time. If I were to make a rough time line I ideally complete the pattern design process somewhere between 4 to 5 weeks. I would then give myself another 2 weeks to decide on the material I would use and weather or not I would cut blocks with a bias cut. Negotiation with the manufacturer and making revisions to the samples would be the most time consuming part of this project. From first sending over my completed pattern and all material needed to receiving the final sample would most likely take anywhere from 5 – 6 months. After all that final production would most likely take another 5 – 6 months depending on the MOQ. All and all this entire project if I was being generous with time would probably take around a year and a half.
  3. To execute this project I would obviously need a very large sum of money. Producing 30 pairs of pants was about $6000 so with nicer material and a more complicated pattern to be safe I would say this project would cost at least $8000 depending again on the number of ordered products. Another thing I would need to complete this project is a space to work on pattern design and cutting. My apartment is very small and I don’t own a table so a space to work would be crucial.
  4. I didn’t read ahead and already answered this question.

AR/VR Project #3

For this project we were tasked with making an AR card for a holiday of our choice. I decided to make a valentines day card as it’s the nearest holiday, as far as I know. I figured making one for my girlfriend would be corny so I decided to make one for my second girlfriend, Kratom. I didn’t run into any issues for the most part while working on this project. I couldn’t figure out why my gif wasn’t animating but I had the action set to “play animation” instead of “play image”. The only other problem I ran into was forgetting to add the word “love” to the lower text on my card, but by the time I noticed this I had decided it was to late to go back and change everything.

Blog Assignment #8

This week we heard from Abdul Kassamili, a filmmaker and film producer from the Seattle area. One of the reoccurring problems he spoke about was things not going according to the plan he had created. He also spoke a lot about the importance of planning even if the plan doesn’t play out exactly has you would have hoped. This same week we were also asked to write a blog post about a project that we had planned out and did not go as we had hoped. This prompt reminded me of the time I also had a project with a solid plan that did not pan out as I anticipated. The project I am referring to was a project given in Jasons class on Illustrator. The task was to create four logos in a similar style centered around a random topic. This normally would not be a difficult assignment but the challenge came from the fact that we had to do it with a partner. I’m not going to name my partner but this person was extremely unresponsive in the beginning stages of the project. We only had a week to complete the assignment and I had finished my sketches on the first day. I messaged them on slack to see how we could incorporate both our design styles and didn’t hear back until the night before the project was due. When they did finally get back to me I had already designed four icons. I told them what size grid and line weight I used in hopes that we could find some kind of coherent style for the icons. They said they understood but when it came time to present they had completely ignored the perimeters. I adapted to this situation by accepting it and saying nothing although I turned in the four I had created to Jason.

Blog Assignment #7

Last week we listened to a lecture given by Steve Hanson. Steve is a food photographer and 3D modeler, also focusing on food and food packaging. The assignment for this week was to create a visual of food with the goal of making it look as appetizing as possible. For my project I chose a bottle of Sanpellegrino Sparkling Water. I chose this not only because it was the only food in my apartment but also because I quite like the design of the label. I first took a photo of it with the best lighting I could find, which was on a windowsill. I then brought the image into Photoshop and removed the background. I then made some corrections to the image including the contrast and brightness in order to make it look more appealing. I then created added a colored background and tried my best to create a realistic shadow for the bottle. I then added a few drops of condensation using the ellipse and gradient tool before realizing how tedious this process was and giving up. If I had to do this project again I would try to create condensation on the bottle before taking the picture in order to avoid doing it in post.

AR/VR Project #2

For the second project, an app review, I chose to create my presention on the app Polycam. Polycam is an app that allows the user to create 3D models on their phone from pictures. The app has the user take photos while moving either the object or themselves in a circular motion. The user can then view these models in AR using the camera on their phone. I think the app is an extremely powerful tool considering how easy it is to use and the range of applications it has. I didn’t run into any problems while completing this assignment because the app makes everything needed to be done very straight forward. I also think the price for the app is very reasonable, being about $8 a month or $60 a year, although this price does make it less accessible to certain people. I was very surprised with how well the AR portion of the app works, being able to determine the size of the object scanned and relay that information back when viewing. Overall I think this app is great and has a lot of practical real world applications and I very much enjoyed my time using it.

AR/VR Project 1

I came up with the idea for this project sitting at my desk eating a Sugarbee apple and I knew I wanted to to incorporate that into my project somehow. I came up with the design of the sun logo from just thinking about what would be easy to animate in photoshop, which is the program I used to make the gif. A problem I ran into was with the Eyejacker program. My audio file was too large and Eyejacket wouldn’t load the animation or sounds when my image was scanned. To remedy this I shortened the audio down to a few seconds and had more success.
