June 2023 – Ethan Fields

I live my life as a pedestrian. There are many highs and lows that go along with that. For one, I never have to worry about parking, but it can often take 3 times as long to get somewhere. You win some, you lose some, c’est la vie. One of the bigger benefits for me is getting to zone out to music and just sink into my head for a bit. This week has been incredibly stressful, but I did try to take some time during my commute to just really absorb my journey. That’s when I realized that every day while I’m riding the train with music blasting in my ears, I am actually planning out future films I’d like to make. Whenever I listen to an album, I will conjure images in my head to go with it. The train is just the perfect place for me to really dwell on some of those cinematic ideas. Sometime the music can be nostalgic, and I’ll find myself plotting out my own biopic and even picturing specific scenes. When the music is high bpm with that deep bass I envision the neon noir cityscapes from the depths of my imagination. Surprisingly the often morosely mundane trek from west Seattle to the heart of capitol hill has turned out to be one of my greatest creative tools. From now on I will continue to really pay attention to what I’m thinking about while on the train, and hopefully get started on a few screenplays.
