Blog Assignment #6

Reflecting on an experience where I failed to meet the expectations of a project, I’d like to share a story from my time as an interaction designer in a high-tech company. Our monthly product requirement review meetings were crucial in ensuring we were meeting user needs and explaining how the interaction worked. However, during one such meeting, the product manager delivered the document late, leaving me with no time to design the wireframe properly before the looming deadline. I did my best to complete the project with the same quality as before, but had to compromise due to time constraints.

Looking back, I realize that I should have prioritized the most critical aspects of the design to complete the project on time. To do so, I should have reviewed the product requirement document and identified the functions that the developer needed to finish the next month. I would then have focused on designing the essential elements of the main page and ensured that all of them were included, leaving the design of feedback until the next meeting.

During the meeting, I should have collaborated with the engineer to address any technical problems and modify the design accordingly. After the meeting, we would have announced any changes made in the group chat. I now realize the importance of effective time management and prioritization to ensure that all projects are completed on time and to the best of my abilities.

Blog assignment #5

As someone with a background in UX design, I have developed strong hard skills in this field. My expertise in UX design, along with my familiarity with design guidelines, make me a valuable asset to any company looking for a designer who can create human-centered products that deliver specific results. These technical skills are important in getting me the interview and showing my ability to perform the job.

However, I understand that in today’s competitive job market, it’s not just hard skills that matter. Soft skills, such as logical thinking and analysis, and project management, are just as important in securing and thriving in a job. These skills have been honed through my experience as a UX designer, as I constantly need to analyze user data and manage projects from start to finish.

Going forward, I want to continue to grow my skills in artificial intelligence techniques and aesthetic design. These hard skills will not only increase my value as a designer but also enable me to tackle new and exciting challenges in the field.

In addition, I recognize that improving my communication and persuasion skills is crucial for my success as a designer. Being a bilingual speaker, I sometimes struggle to adapt to English-speaking work environments, but with improved communication skills, I’ll be able to more effectively convey my ideas and opinions. Persuasion skills are also crucial in collaborative settings where conflicts may arise. By having the ability to persuasively guide a project to success, I can ensure that everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal.

In conclusion, both hard and soft skills are essential for success in any field. My background in UX design has allowed me to develop strong technical skills, but I understand the importance of also focusing on soft skills such as communication and persuasion. With continued growth in both areas, I am confident in my ability to succeed in my future endeavors.

Blog assignment #1- Food

The Cantonese Style Beef Brisket Soup was a special dish that I had been perfecting for weeks. I had a passion for cooking and loved experimenting with new flavors and ingredients. This soup was my latest creation, and I was eager to share it with my family and friends.

As I stood in the kitchen, I was struck by the sound of the soup boiling. It was a comforting and familiar sound, one that reminded me of my childhood and the times I spent cooking with my grandmother. I realized that the sound would make a great addition to a video advertisement for the soup.

I quickly grabbed my phone and started recording the soup. The camera captured the steam rising from the pot, the sound of the boiling liquid, and the soft and tender pieces of brisket. I then found a box container online and used Photoshop to change the brand and food name.

With the video and the container in hand, I opened After Effects and started working on combining the two. I added special effects, transitions, and animations to make the video more dynamic and engaging. The final result was a visually stunning and mouth-watering advertisement for the Cantonese Style Beef Brisket Soup. I was proud of my creation and couldn’t wait to share it with the world.

Blog assignment #2 Things unpredictable in project

In terms of things not going exactly according to plan, I have to say it must be the first project of  Narrative film making. Thinking of all the projects I went through, filmmaking is the hardest  thing to stick to the plan  for me.

In the program, we need  to shoot a short story on the theme of “The Stalker”. At the beginning , we need to draw a storyboard  to plan what we want to capture in the story. In the storyboard,  draw the image I want in the box, then below describe the shot type, and a brief note on what is happening in the shot.  Besides, we need to use a minimum of 5 shots to cover the action/scene.  Secondly, we need to shoot our storyboard.  At last, adjust footage/shoot additional content as needed.

However, things started to go wrong right from the start. The weather was not cooperating, causing delays and forcing us to change our shooting locations. Besides, as a beginner getting into the filmmaking area, there are lots of things to be modified in the storyboard after I see what we shoot in the camera. Although I only need to  have 5 different shots, I have moved my camera more than 5 times to enrich the story.  I also had technical difficulties with my equipment, which added even more time to the already tight schedule.

Despite these challenges, I pushed forward and adapted my plans to accommodate the circumstances I encountered. I used the unexpected change in cast to bring a fresh perspective to the story and explore new angles. I utilized the weather to the advantage, incorporating it into the story and creating unique and moody visuals.

In the end, I was able to complete the shoot and put together a short film that exceeded my expectations. The challenges I faced taught me the importance of being flexible and creative. The final product was a true testament to the power of resilience and determination.

AR Panels

In this experimental project, we used AR technique for the light rail in Seattle. We hope to keep the AR experience relevant and engaging to the users while also providing practical and useful information. We imagine an AR-enhanced map that provides real-time information about train schedules and shows direction for the passenger. At the same time, we design an AR-powered art gallery that showcases local artists and exhibitions at some special stations.

In terms of software and process to make it, we use Figma to cooperate and standardize the style. And then export panels in PNG. Besides, I use photoshop to make the gif that mimic the hand was walking.
