I love following and watching SCCA alumni work on Instagram, just love to see how amazing they were after graduated from the program; Lao was one of the persons that inspiring me a lot in my Illustration style, and the way using color. Believe it or not, most of his illustration works are done just with BASIC SHAPE, and LETTER. I’m not pretty sure what was the year he graduated, I guess 2018, the only thing I know about him is that he’s SCCA alumni and he’s a cool guy. We have a fun conversation together on Instagram, I asked him some questions about what I’ve concern. I want to become an illustrator, but the hand drawing skill is the thing that hold me back, I don’t have a phenomenal hand drawing skill; however, I’m confident with my software skill and able to visually convey ideas through a sketch. The question for Lao is all about how necessary of the technical hand drawing skill for to be an Illustrator doing style like him. From what I am understanding, the answer is: No, you don’t need to have a good technical hand drawing, as long as you know what you want to do, creative concepting is more important -> sketch thing out-> make the magic happen in Illustrator. Here is the conversation between us if anyone curious.
Just to clarify, the things that I said above just for this particular illustration style. The technical hand drawing will really important if you do digital drawing that kind of stuffs.
