Blog number 1 has been a series of pivots. At first I believed I had enough time to accomplish something truly delicious. I was playing around with the idea of redesigning a drink brand, much as my classmate Dunham has done for his website. I thought it would be a good chance to build portfolio content. Unfortunately, the time crunch took hold with other projects thrown in and I knew I’d be shooting myself in the foot if I had attempted that. I began searching for other alternatives. Creating an animation of buttered toast? Taking a series of pictures of a sliced pineapple I had laying around? Animating the pineapple?? I was left pondering and the pineapple rotted away. A digital painting of a citrus fruit perhaps? French fries. I settled on the fries and got working in procreate. After a long afternoon painting the fries I realized I’m no Miyazaki, my fries looked cold and stale. I decided the next best approach to perfection is learning, so taking a que from Steve Hansen, I set out to learn Blender. I knew from the beginning I wasn’t going to get anything more than a low poly lunch, but I felt the effort would be enough. After many tedious hours of how-to videos I was left with the ugliest rendering of fries I’ve ever seen. Blender seemed to conspire against me, as the ketchup cup in my render would turn jagged whenever it was in render mode. I alas couldn’t find a solution online so I had to accept the loss. The results were a far cry from my initial idea of rebranding. Loft goals indeed, but I have a soft spot for low poly crunch and the ugly PS1 graphics are making a comeback. Maybe McDonalds is out there looking for some lowly Designer to launch their new throw back burger builder game?? A man can hope.
