Winter 2024 Blog Assignment #3

The video game I interacted with was Fortnite. This game is set as a battle royale chosen between a single or multi-player layout that can either be played on a desktop or console. In this instance, I played the game using a Nintendo Switch where I was able to play portability to place my experience so that I could play anywhere. I selected a solo game where I had to play to be the last one standing. When the game began, the lobby consisted of other players while I waited with them to get on a bus that was going to skydrop all of us onto areas on the Fortnite map. When I landed in the chosen area it was up to me as a player to collect as much loot to survive and defend myself until the very end of my game. I had to keep in mind that someone could get me out of the game by killing me, so I remained vigilant to build up my ranking.

The purpose for collecting loot is because the whole game is about the last one standing the loot can be weapons like guns and explosives as well as heal to protect from other players. They color cordite the types of weapons you use from grey being the most common, green being uncommon, blue being rare, purple being epic, and gold being legendary depending on what you find it’ll either keep you at and high risk of loose or winning. To make it easier for the users they include a chest around the locations where you find loot (which is all over the map) a glowing symbol with a magical sound will pop up and guide you to where the chess could be. They also used features such as hearing footsteps to know when other players are nearby so that it prepares the user to fight them off. I have a limitation of 5 items of loot you have on deck, this caused me to be intentional about what I need to collect to win/survive. It doesn’t just stop there, every minute there’s a storm that gets closer. Your character has to be in the circle that represents a safe zone away from the storm that can also eliminate you from the game.

I enjoyed seeing the colorful visuals of the game as they tied the experience for the player together. The rush was exciting especially because I wanted to win so badly and by collecting loot. I understood I could receive rare pieces of weapons or equipment that could boost my ranking in the game. Therefore, I was able to look forward to possibly finding those rare gems. This game resorts to you having to use critical thinking skills to keep yourself from being eliminated from the game which kept me on my toes which I enjoyed keeping up with. What I did not enjoy about the game was how the game does not support loading all sorts of character skins as it would typically support specific consoles such as PS4, Xbox, or PCs. As a result, there would be instances in the game where I had to kill someone regarding a bounty/challenge and I could not do so because I did not know what the character looked like since on the Nintendo Switch all the skins were set to default.
