Blog #2

Personal spectrum

Hello again,

Welcome to my blog #2, this week we had amazing time with our guests speaker from Microsoft, Joe Hallock – principle design director and his 2 team members Ethel Xu and Rui Wu.

We all left so inspired not only from Joe and his journey to where he is today, but we also can feel very related with Ethel and Rui on how they get into big company like Microsoft with all of their hard work. I loved how great all the examples that they gave us, how to make a great resume, improving your portfolio with volunteer projects, what’s the most important things that big companies looking for when viewing your resume/portfolio. Aside of that, Joe also shared with us some real talk over tactics vs strategy, week in a life of a designer, important vs urgent, scale and design culture, career and continuous growth, as well as structuring your portfolio as I mentioned above.

After hearing Joe’s speech on a helpful graph that spanned from High Information Density to Low Information Density and from Broad Audience to Specific Audience. I made a small graph (above) on my daily work I need to get done for every day homework, midterm/final, either smaller project or some bigger ones that take not only take more time to get done, but also could be more important and need more detail attention into them.

As you can see, I am trying to do my daily homework right after each class if there is something small, quick and easy to finish, that way I can get them done right away to move on with other classes with bigger project. When it comes to bigger homework projects, I have a strong time management on each project and make sure to have it done a night before each class. For smaller project for midterm/final, I gather information early and try to work on them ASAP, study hard and make sure get some feedback right away so I can improve my work, for the bigger project for midterm and final, I am not only start on it ASAP but also brainstorm, pay more attention, work on it everyday, and make sure to be on schedule on each week on where I need them to be. That’s my spectrum for myself to finish my work and be successful in all of my classes.

Thank you for taking your time reading my blog #2 and can’t wait to share more with you all on my next blog next week. Ciao for now!

Mash-up project

Hello! Welcome to my one and only blog, my new home that I can share all the exciting journeys throughout my 2 years adventure to become one of the greatest graphic designer (fingers crossed).

This is my first ever post, I just want to share something fun that I call a “mash-up project”. After listened to our first guest speaker Paolo Tossolini with his amazing stories and ideas of “mashup”, I made a little board above that included some of a projects that I have done with all of my classes in the last couple weeks as 1st year graphic design student.

As you can see the projects included “road map” as my first presentation for the Illustrator class before we heading into learning some of the amazing tools for illustrator, some discussion with the class for Design history class with the topic of appropriation in the realm design/media/marketing and the example I brought was the lawsuit between Gucci and Guess. Below you will see some icon projects for Introduction to Design class as well as a idea map that we got to shared, AMAZING, isn’t it?. Not to forget one of the class that I (and maybe half the class) feel so immediating out of the others – Interactive, you can see the some work that we are working on for the Yale-School of Art website. Last but not least, the colorful background you see on the board is one of the transition project for the after effect class, fun stuffs but also a challenge for this class.

Afterall, there are some connections between all the classes that supporting one to the others and help shaping me to become a better graphic designer one day at the time. That’s all for today, I hope you enjoying my blog and I will see you for more next week. Ciao!
